Via del Pigneto
The main street, Via del Pigneto, is a pedestrianised strip of bars, restaurants, and vintage shops that becomes Rome's most interesting aperitivo scene after 6pm. The bars serve natural wine, craft beer, and house cocktails alongside small plates of food from the whole Mediterranean. The energy is young and cosmopolitan, the prices are reasonable, and the conversation tends to go late.
Street Art and Cinema
Pigneto was where Pier Paolo Pasolini filmed parts of Accattone and Mamma Roma — his neorealist studies of Rome's working poor. The neighbourhood still has walls covered in murals and the independent cinema culture that Pasolini loved. The Cinema Aquila hosts independent films and occasional outdoor screenings. The street art, while not as curated as in other cities, has an authenticity that tourist-district murals rarely achieve.
The New Roman Restaurants
The most interesting restaurants opening in Rome in the last decade have tended to open in Pigneto. The cooking ranges from updated Roman classics to genuinely experimental work. Prices are lower than the centre. Reservations are easier to get. The clientele are the people who will tell you, in three years, that you should have come earlier.
Getting to Pigneto
Pigneto sits east of the historic centre, ten minutes by tram from Termini station. The journey passes through ordinary Roman streets — tabaccherie, bakeries, apartment blocks with washing on the balconies — that represent the city most tourists never see. Tram 14 from the Termini area is the most direct route; the Metro C stops at Pigneto station. The neighbourhood is best explored on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening when the crowd is mostly local. Arrive at 7pm for aperitivo, eat at 9:30pm, and leave by midnight.
